Tasting Event June 16, 2022: Affordable & Easily Accessible Wines

Thank you to everyone who came out to the Edwardsville Wine Club’s first tasting event!

The theme was chosen with the idea of “going back to the basics” – the idea of doing and enjoying the fundamentals – of appreciating the experience every time you pick up a glass of wine. I went to Dierburgs and picked wines under $30 a bottle that anyone can grab from the grocery store. Good wines don’t have to be expensive and this event’s tasting lineup ranged from $14 (a big hit) to $29, averaging $20 a bottle. A few of us wanted to buy a case of the least expensive wine, the $14 Washington State merlot that does things mainstream merlots can’t do.

The tasting lineup was:

Mumm Napa, Brut Prestige NV
Justin, Sauvignon Blanc 2020
Mer Soleil, Reserve Chardonnay 2020
Elouan, Pino Noir 2019
Columbia Crest, Grand Estates Merlot 2018
Storypoint, Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

We discussed several oenophilic topics including terroir, acid/tannins/oak distinctions, how Pinot Noir is often used in white sparkling wine blends, the ever-popular double entendre of “legs”, and how everyone should buy an entire produce department at the grocery store so they know what things smell and taste like.

We look forward to our next tasting event!
